You know, I try to go lie down to sleep and it’s like ‘Oh hey! Did you remember to do this?’ ‘Did you remember when you said that awful thing to someone when you were five? Let’s think about that!’ or like, old arguments, or you know, I’ll just rehash loads of old situations just to get myself into tears. Florence: Oh, I don’t want to tell the story!
Interviewer: Oh come on!
Florence: Um, it was on my trampoline…I was 11. And it was like, uh, with my friend’s brother’s friend. And they were just going, “Awe yeah! You guys should snog, you guys should snog.” and I didn’t know kinda what it entailed. And I was like, “Oh yeah, okay I’ll do it.” I stood up, and it was so horrible. It was like a washing machine…. I sent everyone away and then watched Sister, Sister on Nickelodeon and cried.

“Being heartbroken is really intoxicating… it’s like, you’ve been so hurt that you feel like nothing else can touch you. You feel almost invincable; it’s a kind of terrible freedom. You know that stage where where you don’t care about yourself anymore? I was just like, I’m going to go out and I don’t care what happens to me. You feel very broken. You can go out and not come home for three days and not have to call anyone because you feel like you don’t have anyone to answer to, because you’re not in the relationship anymore and there’s nothing to ground you.”

Loads of clattery drums and the choir takes it to the next level. “I always thought like, in order to say something to one person, I have to put it in a song and sing it to a couple thousands of people in order to direct one point at somebody. I’ve always been incredibly like hard…saying in conversation how I feel or what ….Cause now I think of it, because from singing and having that release like I always feel like I’m not telling the truth when I am speaking? Cause it’s like, it feels somehow not real…not that it’s not real, it just feels like, putting stuff into songs is how I deal with my emotions. So saying them doesn’t quite have same effec…You know, it’s like you put so much of your emotion into this one way of doing it, you always feel like you’d be forging it speaking things. It’s just really tough I think..especially when you’re trying to have a relationship. You can’t figure out exactly what it is you want to say and …so I think almost like my way of apologizing…saying something without really saying it is to put it in a song. I think it deals with my lack of relationship conversational skill.”
